Differences Between Cardcaptors (U.S.) and Cardcaptor Sakura
1.Even though Sakura kept her name, her last name, which was originally Kinomoto, has been changed to Avalon.
2.Syaoran's name has been switched around to become Li Showron instead of Syaoran Li.
3.Meiling Li's name was changed to Meilin Rae, and Tomoyo Daidouji was changed to Madison Taylor.
4.Cerberus (Kero-chan) has been changed to Keroberus.
6.Yue's name was kept, but is now pronounced as "You-ay"
7.Eriol's new name is Eli Moon…and Spinel Sun's new name is…SPINNER?!
5.Sakura's friends, family members, and teacher's names have all been changed to sound more American-like. Nelvana wanted the names to be able to be pronounced by little kids watching the show.
Other Changes
6.The first episode of Cardcaptors began with the original episode 8, making us drop right into the middle of an ongoing story without any clue on what's going on. Episode 8 was the first episode in which Sakura's male rival/ally, Syaoran, was introduced. Eventually, they aired the first episode as part of a flashback during the Sand Card episode.
7.Meiling and Syaoran were originally cousins and fiancees, but Nelvana changed their relationship because they felt it wasn't appropriate.
8.The dubbed version is heavily edited, with a lot of scenes cut out and conversation being twisted around and changed.
9.Nelvana is not dubbing the Cardcaptors episodes in order. They're skipping around a lot, dubbing only the episodes they think would be interesting to the viewers. Originally, they were going to only air only 13 episodes; the 13 episodes with the most action and excitement.
10.To make up for skipping a lot of the episodes, they're adding in a lot of flashbacks of card captures in the episodes that they are dubbing, which takes time away from the storyline of that particular episode. (If they're going to add in all these dumb flashbacks, why not just dub all the episodes? Geesh...)
11.The relationship between Yukito (Julian) and Touya (Tori) is completely cut out.
12.There is no sign whatsoever of Li having a crush on Yukito.
13.Sakura seems to slightly have an attitude problem and seems like a brat in the dub.
14.Sakura, Li, Madison, and Kero's vices are much deeper and mature than their original voices, making them sound older than they seem. Sakura had a really cute, sweet voice in the original.
15.Why is Nelvana making all these changes? The answer...to make the show more boy-friendly and appealing to the boy audience.
16.Sometimes in the Cardcaptors commercials that WB airs, Li seems to be the prominent character and Sakura a secondary character.
17.The more sweeter, lighter Japanese opening song for Cardcaptor Sakura, "Catch You, Catch Me" is gone. In place of it is the uninteresting monotonous opening song currently playing.
18.The show presents "the card of the episode" segment at the end of each show, while in the original ending segment of the Japanese version, there was a Kero segment, where Kero examines and explains Sakura's battle outfits and accessories of the episode.
19.The background music is more dark and dreary, in conflict to the much brighter visual surroundings. None of the original background effects and music was kept in the dub.
20.Sakura's name is often pronounced wrong, it being said as "Sur-Kura" instead of "Sa-Kur-a".
21.The words that Sakura says when sealing a card has been changed. In the Japanese version, she said, "Return to thy true form...Clow card!", instead of "Clow Card! Return to your power confined!"
22.The Sakura Cards are now called "Star Cards"
23.Cuts, cuts, and more CUTS! Most time, they cut out the most important scenes, or even just a scene as simple as Syaoran or Sakura blushing. Many of the cuts made are totally unnecessary.
24.Instead of referring to Julian and Kero as their false forms, they are now referred to as their "earthly forms" by Yue and Keroberos.
25.During the Final Judgement, the price to pay in the original Japanese version for losing to Yue was that everyone related to the Clow Cards would lose their love for the person they most cared for. In the dubbed version, it was changed to that everyone would forget what had happened since the Clow Cards were released. It would have been as if none of the events had ever existed for the Cardcaptors and friends.
26.There is no evidence whatsoever of Rita having a crush on Mr. Terada.
27.The dialogue and plots for some of the episodes were completely changed, such as for the episode "Allies." In the original, this was the 3rd episode, and Sakura had only 3 cards to help her against Watery. She felt that there was no way she could win against the card. In the dubbed, it was episode 16, and Sakura had to consider the first 3 cards she had ever captured to be her strongest allies out of all the other cards, and these were the cards to help her against Watery. They also changed Sakura's date with Yukito so it became a casual bumping into him at the aquarium instead.
New Season of Cardcaptors:
28.The first episode of the new season of Cardcaptors, "The Past, The Present, and The Future" was completely comprised of flashbacks, along with a snippet here and there from episode 48. They aired this episode, which was episode 2 of that season, before they aired episode 47. Near the end of this messed up episode, it cut into the beginning of the episode prior, which they aired later that day. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.
29.For the new season of Cardcaptors, the opening song is still the same old song, but the pictures have changed to include scenes from the Sakura Card season.
30.At the end of each episode, there is a segment now called "Secrets of the Clow." It has Kero jumping up and yelling hello to the viewers, like the "Kero's Corner" segment in the original show. It's kind of like Kero's Corner, with the same rectangular box surrounding the scene. But instead of focusing on Sakura's costumes and accessories, it focuses on a certain Clow Card. >.<
31.The 2nd episode of the new season of Cardcaptors was actually a combination of the original first two episodes. (47 and 48). Suppi's voice (when he's in his false form) is so much deeper than his original cool, suave one. They also jumped to episode 50, which was the episode where everyone's true form was first revealed. I guess they wanted to cram all the essentials into one episode. x.x
32.There is another new saying for transforming Sakura's wand and the cards, different from the original Eriol's incantation (Eli, excuse me) has also been changed. Things don't have to rhyme to be good, you know! Sometimes rhyming incantations makes the incantation seem even dorkier.
33.x.x For some strange unknown reason, the Watery Card has been renamed as the Water Card, Earthy Card as the Earth Card. Why not change Windy and Firey as well while you're at it? (Wait...didn't they change Firey too?)
34.To make things look more "mystical," the dubbers often paint in red glowing areas where Eli uses his magic. Some were in the original (Such as Tori's bicycle glowing red after Eli cast his spell on it.) but others were drawn in in the dub. For example, the bear's ear did NOT glow red as Eli was helping Sakura sew her teddy bear in the original show. (The bear which Sakura eventually gave Julian.)
35.What exactly are these "tests" Eli speaks of? In the original, he was not causing all these disturbances to test Sakura and see if she was worthy to become the new master of the Clow Cards. He was causing the disturbances in order to give Sakura a reason to change the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards before their magic ran out. It would have been dangerous otherwise for Sakura to change all 52 Clow Cards into Sakura Cards without reason. It was just his strange way of helping Sakura. But I don't think I ever watched him saying they were tests which she had to pass. In a sense, I guess they are tests where she had to test her endurance and magic, seeing how long she could hold on until she fainted. But not officially "tests." (Did anyone just understand what I said? ^^;;;)
36.The worse cut of all, in my opinion. Syaoran's love confession to Sakura is entirely cut out. He never gives her his bear (Heck, they never even show him actually making a bear), and the entire airport scene where he leaves for Hong Kong is never shown. All he does is tell her that he's going back home the next day, and that's it. x.x (*raves* I'm an S+S fan, and they cut this cute part OUT!!)
37.*ahem* They did show Sakura crying in the last episode and forming a new Sakura Card. But...umm...one teensy lil change was made to the Sakura Card she made though. The words "Hope" were written on the bottom. This card never actually had a name, and it eventually combined with the Void/Nothing Card to form the Hope Card in the 2ND MOVIE.
38. 39 episodes aired out of 70. (In the U.S. that is. In Canada, more were aired.) A disappointing number, with 2 episodes crammed into one at times, and increasing amounts of flashbacks. Thank goodness for my subbed tapes.
